Universities and colleges struggle to stem big drops in enrollment

There has been a sharp drop in the number of individuals choosing small, nonprofit colleges as well as public universities and other higher education institutions. Due to a decrease in the birth rate, there are fewer 18- to 24-year-olds graduating from high school, particularly in the Midwest and Northeast. Combine that with an even steeper dip in students older than 24, and enrollment numbers across the board have been dropping — for the past five years. In response, institutions are reducing tuition while finding ways to tailor academic offerings to student and workforce demands.
